Ever wonder when you officially become ‘old’? Apparently, it’s at 74 years and 8 months. So much for ‘age is just a number,’ right?
Here’s the scoop: Research says the age at which we’re considered old keeps creeping up. In fact, the older we get, the further we push that ‘old’ label. We’re basically moving the goalposts so we can stay young longer. Today, old age starts just shy of 75, which means midlife is stretching out too—like, really stretching.
And honestly, who among us actually feels our age? My friends and family? Not a single one acts their age. Sure, life can give us some hard knocks, but most of us feel younger than our birth certificate says we should. It’s called ‘subjective age bias,’ and it turns out it’s pretty common.
Take a cue from the actor Michelle Yeoh. At 60, she used her Oscar acceptance speech to tell the world not to let anyone say they’re past their prime. She’s a ‘flat ager’—someone who refuses to be defined by the number on their ID. Gone are the days of the stereotypical, lavender-scented granny. Today’s midlifers are tech-savvy, full of energy, and living life to the fullest.
At Midlife Crossroads Academy, we’re all about helping you embrace that mindset. We guide midlifers to find purpose, set goals, and kick old age to the curb. We encourage our members to question society’s age labels and redefine what “prime” means for themselves. Because if we keep redefining old age, we’re also rewriting what it means to live fully at every stage.
Look around you: 50-somethings are starting new careers, 60-somethings are taking up adventure sports, and 70-somethings are hitting new personal bests in fitness and hobbies. At Midlife Crossroads Academy, we believe life’s possibilities expand as you do. Every chapter brings new experiences to explore and different dreams to pursue—no matter your age. Embrace it, redefine it, and live it in your own way.
So, when do you think midlife ends? Or does it? Maybe age really is just a number after all.
