I felt quite inspired by my recent blog about entrepreneurship in midlife, so in these past weeks I’ve been interviewing three midlifers who started their own business. In this blog you can find the third interview (you can read the first interview here and the second interview here).
Maria, a 55-year-old former mathematics teacher, had always been passionate about sustainable living and organic farming. After years of teaching, she decided to turn her passion into a business by starting an organic farm.
Where did the idea for your own business come from? I have always had a keen interest in healthy living and environmental sustainability. When I saw an increasing demand for organic produce, I started to think I could contribute to this growing market.
How did you start? I had inherited a small piece of land from my grandparents, but hadn’t done anything with it for over a decade. First, I attended agricultural workshops and spoke to experienced farmers, because I have very little -read: no- farming experience. I also took at least 5 online courses on organic farming techniques and sustainable practices.
Which challenges did you have to overcome? Starting an organic farm requires significant time and effort. Balancing this with my family responsibilities was challenging, but my family supported my dream. They helped with farm tasks, and my husband took on more household responsibilities.
How did you navigate the financial risks? I used my savings to invest in the necessary equipment and seeds. To limit my financial exposure, I decided early on to diversify my income by offering farm tours, workshops, and collaborating with local restaurants and markets to supply organic produce. I also applied for agricultural grants and subsidies to support my venture.
How did you build your business? I made a point of actively engaging with my local community, hosting farm-to-table events and educational programs. I was and am very committed to quality and sustainable practices, which helped to build a loyal customer base. My background in teaching helped as well, it enabled me to effectively communicate the benefits of organic farming and healthy eating.
Where are you now? Me and the business are doing very well! I’ve expanded my product range to include organic eggs, honey, and homemade preserves. The farm has become a local hub for sustainable living and manages to attract visitors from nearby towns. It has taken almost 4 years and a lot of effort, but with passion, education, and community engagement, I’ve managed to transform a dream into a successful business venture.
The stories of Sarah, Tom and Maria illustrate the diverse possibilities that midlife entrepreneurship can offer. Whether transitioning from a corporate career, diving into the tech industry, or starting an organic farm, midlife entrepreneurs can create meaningful and impactful ventures.
For those considering entrepreneurship in midlife, remember that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. With careful planning, resilience, and a passion for your chosen field, you can navigate the challenges and achieve success. Embrace the journey, and let midlife be a time of new beginnings and exciting opportunities!
